Back by popular demand, the show draws audience members back in time to 1946 as members of the KPNF radio station are assembling for a live radio performance of A Miracle on 34th Street. As they bring to life the entire story through dozens of character voices and live foley sound effects, you’ll be re-introduced to Kris Kringle, the delightfully charming Macy’s mascot put on trial for claiming to be the real Santa Claus. Besieged by commercialism and skepticism, winning the trial and restoring his friends’ faith in the true spirit of Christmas will require nothing short of a miracle!
A Miracle on 34th Street Classic Radiocast is the seventh production in Penfold’s series of live radio plays for the holidays. Associate Artistic Director Nathan Jerkins crafted the adaptation alongside radio scripts for It’s a Wonderful Life (2016) and A Christmas Carol (2015). “Today’s news stories bombard us with frightening displays of violence and greed,” says Producing Artistic Director Ryan Crowder. “Telling stories of hope during the holidays is our way standing against despair and celebrating the noblest human virtues. A Miracle on 34th Street is a tale in which belief in love and community carries the day.”
The performance features mock radio commercials for local businesses and a nightly cameo role for a selected member of the audience. Glowing with warmth and undeniably evocative of the true Christmas spirit, the performance is a perfect way to ring in the holiday season.
